Lokah Chapter 2: Tovino Thomas Leads the Next Chapter — Cast, Shooting and Release Update

After Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra became the first Malayalam film to cross ₹300 crore worldwide, fans have one question: what comes next? Lokah Chapter 2, the second instalment in Wayfarer Films’ superhero universe, will be led by Tovino Thomas as Chathan, the mischievous folklore figure he introduced in a scene-stealing cameo in the first film. Here is everything we know so far about the cast, story hints, shooting schedule and expected release.

This article is updated as new official information becomes available. Details not confirmed by the makers are clearly marked as reported.

A Quick Recap of Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra

Released on 28 August 2025, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra introduced Chandra (Kalyani Priyadarshan), a mysterious woman with supernatural powers who arrives in Bengaluru and becomes entangled with a young man (Naslen) and a criminal network. Written and directed by Dominic Arun, with music by Jakes Bejoy, it blended Kerala folklore with superhero storytelling.

The film became a sensation: it crossed ₹100 crore within a week and went on to become the first Malayalam film to gross ₹300 crore worldwide, also ranking among India’s highest-grossing female-led films. It began streaming on JioHotstar on 31 October 2025. Its record was later overtaken by Bethlehem Kudumba Unit in September 2026 — see our box office report.

Lokah Chapter 2 Cast

Tovino Thomas’ Chathan was one of the most talked-about surprises of the first film. Read our Tovino Thomas movies guide to see how this fits into his remarkable run that includes Minnal Murali, 2018 and ARM.

Story Hints

The makers have not revealed the plot. Based on the first film, Chapter 2 is expected to explore the mythology of the chathan — a mischievous, powerful spirit from Kerala folklore — and expand the hidden world of supernatural beings living among humans. The first film’s ending and its cameo appearances hinted at a larger battle to come, and many fans expect the second chapter to deepen the connections between Chandra, Chathan and the other “Lokah” beings.

Lokah Chapter 2 Shooting and Release Date

In February 2026, Kalyani Priyadarshan said that the writing was in progress and that the team expected to begin shooting in September 2026. Other reports have suggested a start closer to the end of 2026. Multiple reports indicate that the makers are targeting an Onam 2027 release, which would mirror the first film’s successful festival-season launch. No official release date has been announced yet.

Co-writer Santhy Balachandran, who worked on the first film, is reported to be part of the writing team again.

The Lokah Universe: A New Era for Malayalam Cinema

Wayfarer Films has described Lokah as a multi-film universe, with reports suggesting at least four more films are planned after Chapter 2. This makes it Malayalam cinema’s first serious attempt at a connected cinematic universe built on local myths — an approach that could inspire similar projects across Indian cinema.

For Dulquer Salmaan’s production house, it is a major leap. Wayfarer Films started with smaller films such as Varane Avashyamund and Kurup; Lokah turned it into one of the most important banners in South Indian cinema. Read more in our Dulquer Salmaan movies guide.

Who Is Chathan in Kerala Folklore?

In Kerala’s folk traditions, the chathan (often called kuttichathan) is a small, mischievous and powerful spirit. Stories describe chathans playing tricks on households — throwing stones, hiding objects or causing small fires — but also serving those who control them through rituals. The figure has appeared in Malayalam popular culture for decades, most famously in the 1984 3D film My Dear Kuttichathan, India’s first 3D film.

By making Chathan the hero of a superhero film, Lokah reimagines a familiar folk character for a new generation. Tovino Thomas’ playful, slightly dangerous take in the first film suggested a character who can be both funny and fearsome — a combination that should give Chapter 2 a very different tone from Chandra’s darker, more serious story.

Why Expectations Are So High

• Record-breaking predecessor: the first film proved there is a huge audience for Malayalam superhero stories.
• Tovino’s superhero credentials: he already starred in Minnal Murali, one of India’s most loved superhero films.
• Folklore advantage: Kerala’s myths offer rich, original material that feels fresh compared with Western superhero formulas.
• Strong creative team: Dominic Arun and composer Jakes Bejoy built a distinct look and sound for the universe.
