For more than four decades, Mammootty has been one of the pillars of Malayalam cinema. Affectionately called “Mammukka”, he is admired for his commanding screen presence, his mastery of regional dialects and his willingness to take risks — never more so than in his seventies. This guide to the best Mammootty movies covers his journey from a junior artiste in 1971 to a four-time National Award winner, along with the remarkable late-career renaissance driven by his own production house, Mammootty Kampany.

  • Films: 400+ across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and English
  • National Awards for Best Actor: 4 (1989, 1993, 1998, 2026 shared)

Early Life: From Lawyer to Actor

Born Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail, Mammootty grew up in Chempu near Vaikom and studied law at Government Law College, Ernakulam. He practised as a lawyer in Manjeri for about two years. He had already appeared briefly as a junior artiste in Anubhavangal Paalichakal (1971), and his first credited role came in Vilkkanundu Swapnangal (1980), written by M.T. Vasudevan Nair. Films like Mela and Sphodanam soon followed, and by the mid-1980s he was a leading star.

Career Highlights

After a brief slump in the mid-1980s, Joshiy’s thriller New Delhi (1987) made him one of the biggest stars in South India. The same period saw the start of the hugely popular CBI series, in which he played the shrewd investigator Sethurama Iyer across five films from Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (1988) to CBI 5: The Brain (2022).

He moved effortlessly between commercial and art cinema, working with Adoor Gopalakrishnan, K.G. George, Hariharan, Lohithadas and T.V. Chandran as well as mainstream directors such as Joshiy, Ranjith and Shaji Kailas. Outside Kerala, he starred in Mani Ratnam’s Thalapathi, K. Vishwanath’s Swathi Kiranam, Rajiv Menon’s Kandukondain Kandukondain and Ram’s Peranbu.

The Mammootty Kampany Era

Since launching Mammootty Kampany, the star has backed some of the boldest films of his career. Rorschach (2022) was a stylised revenge thriller; Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam (2023) a dreamlike art film; Kaathal – The Core (2023) a sensitive drama about a closeted gay man, which won Best Film at the Kerala State Film Awards. Kannur Squad and Turbo brought commercial success, and Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse (2025) saw him work with Gautham Vasudev Menon. This phase has redefined how audiences see older stars: as artists still willing to experiment.

His non-Kampany choices have been equally adventurous, especially Puzhu, where he played a toxic, casteist father, and Bramayugam, where he played the terrifying Kodumon Potti.

What Makes Mammootty Special as an Actor?

Mammootty is often praised for his voice and his command of Malayalam dialects. He has played characters from Thrissur, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Kasaragod with remarkable precision, and his dialogue delivery in films like Rajamanikyam and Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha is legendary. He is equally known for discipline: his fitness at over 70 is a constant talking point among fans.

But perhaps his greatest quality is curiosity. Rather than repeating safe roles, he has repeatedly chosen young directors with unusual ideas — Lijo Jose Pellissery, Jeo Baby, Rahul Sadasivan, Ratheena — and trusted them completely. That openness is why recent Mammootty movies feel as fresh as anything made by much younger stars.
