Khalifa Story: What Is the Film About?
Khalifa follows Mambarakkal Aamir Ali, played by Prithviraj, the heir to a sprawling gold-smuggling network that stretches from Kerala to the Gulf. The film explores the weight of a family’s criminal legacy, the hunger for power and the cost of revenge, wrapped in slick action set pieces. Promotional material positions it as part gangster drama and part family saga, with the subtitle The Ruler hinting at Aamir’s rise within his grandfather’s empire.
Mohanlal appears as Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali, Aamir’s grandfather. Prithviraj has said this first film mainly introduces the character and that the role would grow in importance if a sequel is made. That makes the Khalifa OTT release a good moment to catch up before any announcement about part two. The story moves across London, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kathmandu and several Indian cities, giving the film an international scale rarely seen in Malayalam cinema.
Cast and Crew
- Prithviraj Sukumaran as Mambarakkal Aamir Ali
- Mohanlal as Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali
- Neil Nitin Mukesh, Indrans, Shammi Thilakan and Sanju Sivaram in key roles
- Malavika Sharma in her Malayalam debut
- Director: Vysakh; Writer: Jinu V. Abraham
- Music: Jakes Bejoy; Cinematography: Jomon T. John; Editor: Chaman Chacko
Vysakh, known for crowd-pleasers such as Pokkiri Raja and Pulimurugan, brings his mass-entertainer instincts to a more stylish, globe-trotting format here. Jinu V. Abraham, who also produced the film with Suraj Kumar, has built a reputation for tightly plotted thrillers. Jakes Bejoy’s background score is one of the elements viewers praised most during the theatrical run, so watch it with good speakers or headphones for the full effect.
Khalifa Box Office Performance
Khalifa opened on August 20 as a big Onam release, with day-one figures of over ₹2.5 crore net in India based on early estimates, and steady occupancy across more than 1,600 shows. It went on to finish among the top ten Malayalam grossers of 2026, with worldwide collections reported at around ₹40 crore. That puts it behind giants like Drishyam 3 and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, but comfortably ahead of many mid-budget releases. The Khalifa OTT release should now help it find a much wider audience at home.
Khalifa vs Other Onam 2026 Releases
Onam 2026 was one of the most competitive festive seasons in recent memory. Khalifa arrived on August 20, just a day before Girish A.D.’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, which went on to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever. Another planned Onam release stepped away from the race to avoid the clash. In that crowded season, Khalifa still drew strong opening crowds thanks to Prithviraj’s star power and the curiosity around Mohanlal’s presence, before the romance took over the box office conversation.
Now both films are streaming within a week of each other, which gives viewers a rare chance to compare two very different crowd-pleasers back to back. The Khalifa OTT release suits viewers who enjoy action, style and gangster drama, while Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is the pick for a lighter family mood. Our Bethlehem Kudumba Unit OTT guide has the details for that film.
Should You Watch Khalifa on OTT?
If you enjoy stylish action, gangster sagas and Prithviraj in larger-than-life mode, Khalifa is worth your weekend. Viewers who expect a tight, twist-heavy thriller may find the story more focused on setting up a world than resolving it, since it is clearly designed as the first chapter. Watching it on a big television with good sound will help recreate the theatre experience. Explore more of the actor’s work in our Prithviraj Sukumaran movies guide and our Mohanlal movies list.
