The True Story Behind Manjummel Boys

The film is based on a real incident from 2006, when a group of young men from Manjummel visited the Guna Caves and one of them, Subhash, fell into a pit. His friend Kuttan went down to rescue him in a daring effort. The real Manjummel boys appear briefly at the end of the film, a moment that drew emotional applause in theatres.

The caves get their popular name from the 1991 Kamal Haasan film Guna, which was shot there, and the film’s use of the classic song “Kanmani Anbodu” created a special bond with Tamil audiences. See more in our list of Malayalam movies based on true stories.

What Makes the Film Special

Much of the film’s power comes from craft. The cave scenes were largely recreated on a constructed set, allowing the crew to control light, water and space while keeping the danger believable. Shyju Khalid’s camera stays close to the actors, so the viewer feels squeezed between rocks alongside them.

Sushin Shyam’s score is used sparingly during the rescue, letting silence, echoes and dripping water build tension. Director Chidambaram also spends the first act on the friends’ banter and holiday fun, which makes the later fear hit harder. The result is a film that works as a thriller and as a story about loyalty.

Why the Manjummel Boys OTT Release Mattered

For viewers outside South India, the OTT release was the first real chance to see what all the noise was about. Social media filled with reactions from Hindi-speaking viewers discovering Malayalam cinema for the first time, and the film helped push the industry’s national profile even higher. It also gave fans a chance to rewatch the intense rescue sequence and catch details they missed in theatres.

Who Should Watch It

  • Thriller fans: the rescue sequence is among the most gripping in recent Indian cinema.
  • Viewers who love friendship stories: the bond between the boys is the emotional core.
  • Newcomers to Malayalam cinema: its simple premise and universal emotions make it an easy entry point.
  • Families with teenagers: there is no graphic content, but some scenes are frightening and claustrophobic for young children.

Viewing Tips

  1. Use headphones or a soundbar: the sound design in the cave is a huge part of the tension.
  2. Watch in the dark: much of the film takes place in low light.
  3. Be aware if you are claustrophobic: some scenes are intense.
  4. Pick the original audio: the Malayalam track with subtitles keeps the friends’ banter and humour intact.
  5. Stay till the end: the real Manjummel boys appear before the credits.
